Celebrate Earth Day in April and Every Day!

April 8, 2025

As the world faces environmental challenges, it’s up to parents and other adults responsible for youth to guide the next generation toward eco-friendly choices. From reducing waste to understanding the importance of renewable energy, kids are ready to explore and understand the challenges. Empowering them to make a positive impact will ensure a healthy planet.

Family involvement in environmental activities is crucial for instilling eco-conscious habits in children, promoting stronger family bonds, and contributing to a more sustainable future for everyone. With small changes in our daily routines, we can make a significant impact. As a family, consider putting some actions in place to be earth friendly. Here are a few ways you can start right now!

  • Assess your energy use. Look for renewable energy sources and use by switching to energy efficient bulbs and appliances.
  • Minimize food waste. Consider growing some of your own fruits and veggies and incorporate more meat-free meals into your diet. A lot of energy goes into the production of food, and approximately 40% of food is thrown away into landfills.
  • Shrink your carbon footprint. Learn more about your family’s carbon footprint by using this calculator from the EPA.
  • Skip the fast fashion and use what you have. If you are in need of a wardrobe upgrade or new decor, get creative in how you reduce or reuse. Shop your friend’s closet, or try consignment and thrift shops in your area and look for creative ways to customize.
  • Cut down on plastic, especially single-use items. Bring your own straw and utensils when grabbing some take out and say no to plastic grocery bags; opt for reusable totes instead.

Making the world a better place is all in a day’s work for a Girl Scout. Further your commitment to the environment by connecting with Girl Scouts in your community. Through Girl Scouting, girls bring their dreams to life and work together to make a difference. They discover their strengths and rise to new challenges. They develop the confidence to consistently step forward, defy norms, and turn ideas into action.

Did you know? Girl Scouts’ founder, Juliette Gordon Low, felt so strongly about caring for the environment that it’s part of the Girl Scout law: “use resources wisely”. That’s right, and Girl Scouts continue to strive to do just that.
